Top 7 Family Photography Tips

Planning a family photo session can feel overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be!

As a lifestyle family photographer in Northwest Arkansas, I’ve worked with countless families to create sessions that feel natural, joyful, and meaningful. With me, your session will be relaxed and fun — and result in images you’ll cherish forever.

Here are my top 7 family photography tips to help you feel confident and prepared for your upcoming shoot:

1. Choose the Right Photographer for Your Family

Before anything else, make sure your photographer’s style aligns with your vision. If you're looking for authentic, connection-driven images, you’ll love the relaxed approach I take with my lifestyle family sessions.

2. Pick the Perfect Location

From open fields to cozy in-home sessions, the right location can set the tone for your photos. Consider your family’s personality — do you love the outdoors, or feel most comfortable at home? If you're not sure where you want your pictures taken at, NO WORRY! I will work with you to pick the perfect location in Northwest Arkansas, but I’m always up for exploring somewhere meaningful to you.

3. Plan Outfits in Advance

Coordinating outfits is key to polished, timeless photos. Stick to a color palette of soft, neutral tones with textures and layers for depth. Avoid bold patterns or logos that can distract from your faces and connection.

Need help deciding what to wear? Perfect! I LOVE helping families pick the perfect outfits while fitting their style.

4. Prep the Kids (and Grown-Ups Too!)

Let your kids know you’ll be taking fun photos together — and keep it light! Avoid putting pressure on them to smile perfectly. When kids are relaxed and happy, their genuine personalities shine through. I always work at their pace, making space for play and spontaneity.

5. Timing is Everything

The best light for outdoor family photos is during golden hour — the hour after sunrise or before sunset. This dreamy lighting creates a soft, warm glow that makes your images magical. I’ll help you choose the ideal time based on your family’s schedule and the season.

6. Bring Essentials (Just in Case)

Snacks, water, wipes, and a favorite toy can go a long way in keeping kids (and parents!) happy. If we're shooting outdoors, bug spray or a blanket to sit on can also be helpful. I always recommend packing a “just in case” bag. Also, bringing a little snack and treat is always helpful! My FAVORITE treat is mini Marshmallows - they are white, mess free, and easy to edit out of photos!

7. Trust the Process

The most beautiful moments are often the unplanned ones — a shared laugh, a quiet snuggle, a silly dance. Don’t stress about perfection. My job is to guide you and capture your family’s natural rhythm and love in a way that feels real.
