How to Plan Outfits for Your Family Session

Tips for looking and feeling your best—while keeping it stress-free.

One of the most common questions I get before a family session is:

“What should we wear?”

And I get it—coordinating outfits for your whole crew can feel overwhelming. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be complicated. As your photographer, I’m here to guide you every step of the way so your family not only looks great but also feels comfortable and confident during your session.

Here are my favorite tips for planning picture-perfect (but still you) outfits:

1. Start with One Outfit You Love

Choose one person’s outfit first—usually mom’s—and build the rest around it. If you feel amazing in what you’re wearing, it’ll show in your photos. From there, choose complementary colors and textures that tie everything together without being too matchy-matchy.

2. Stick to Soft, Neutral, and Earthy Tones

Colors like cream, beige, soft blues, warm browns, dusty pinks, and sage photograph beautifully in natural light and outdoor settings. They help keep the focus on your connection and emotions, rather than bold clothing. Avoid neons, super bright whites, or loud patterns that can distract or reflect color onto your skin.

3. Mix Textures and Layers

Layers, knits, linen, cotton, ruffles, and denim all add interest and movement to your images. Think cozy sweaters in fall, flowy dresses in summer, or a denim jacket layered over a dress for spring. Textures add a beautiful visual element without needing bold prints or patterns.

4. Coordinate - Don’t Match

Aim for colors that complement each other across the family. For example, if mom wears a soft floral dress, dad might wear a solid shirt that pulls from one of the tones in her outfit. The kids can wear muted solids or subtle patterns in the same palette.

5. Keep Comfort in Mind

You’ll be sitting, walking, snuggling, and moving during your session—so wear something you can breathe in and move comfortably. Make sure kiddos feel good in their outfits too! If they’re itchy, too hot, or uncomfortable, it’ll be harder for them to relax and enjoy the session.

6. Details Matter

Barefoot is beautiful for little ones. Add a bow, a hat, or a soft swaddle for baby. Keep shoes neutral and minimal, and empty your pockets before the session to avoid phone-shaped bulges in jeans. It’s the little things that make a big difference!

Still feeling unsure? I'm here to help!

Once you're booked, I’m always happy to help review outfit choices or send inspiration. I'm here to take the guesswork out of planning. My goal is for your session to feel relaxed, joyful, and completely you—and outfits that feel good are a big part of that.

Let’s make magic together!

Whether you’re planning a golden-hour session in the fields or a cozy in-home session with your crew, I’d love to help tell your family’s story in a way that feels honest, connected, and beautiful.
