How to Prepare for Your Senior Portrait Session
Simple Tips to Help You Feel Confident and Camera-Ready
Your senior year is full of once-in-a-lifetime moments—and your portrait session is one of them! Whether you’re counting down the days until graduation or just starting to soak it all in, your senior session should be a relaxed, fun experience that truly reflects who you are.
At Madeline Smith Photography, I walk you through every step—from outfit planning to posing—so you can feel confident and comfortable.
Here are a few of my favorite tips to help you get the most out of your senior session:
1. Choose Outfits You Love (and Feel Good In)
Plan 2–3 outfits that reflect your personality and style.
Think variety:
A casual look (jeans and a tee or cozy sweater)
A dressy outfit (for something timeless and classic)
A meaningful and FUN outfit (something unique to you, shows off your personality, personal interest)

2. Think About Location & Vibe
Love open fields, downtown textures, your high school campus, or a wooded trail at golden hour? Your location helps set the tone. We’ll choose a spot that matches your aesthetic—clean, modern, and full of natural light.
3. Bring the Little Things
These details can make a big impact:
Shoes for each outfit
Accessories (rings, necklaces, hats, class ring)
Touch-up items: hairbrush, lip balm, blotting paper
Water bottle and maybe a snack for mid-session energy
4. Rest Up & Hydrate
You’ll feel your best with a good night’s sleep, plenty of water, and a little time to slow down before the shoot.
Try not to schedule your session right after a busy day—this is your time to shine and enjoy the experience.
5. Relax—I'll Guide You Every Step
You don’t have to know how to pose or “look natural.” That’s my job! I’ll coach you throughout the session so you feel relaxed and confident. Trust me—it’s going to be easier (and more fun) than you think.
Bonus Tip:
Bring a friend or family member if it makes you more comfortable. Some of the best smiles come when you’re laughing with someone you love off-camera.
